DIGITAL BRITAIN REPORT
In years to come we are likely to regard online connectivity as equally essential to our everyday lives as our electricity or water supplies. The internet is a key element of our economic, social and creative future and with the launch of this report the Government has put a plan in place for ensuring everyone can use and benefit from the opportunities that the technology offers. The Labour Government has acted to ensure no one, and no part of The Government’s plans will sustain Britain’s creative industries by; protecting intellectual property; preventing illegal file sharing, providing research and support for the film industry and software development, and we are examining the case to extend this to support to the video games industry; and we are introducing a robust system for video classification which will protect children now and in the future. The Government also announced plans to ensure a plurality of news provision in local and regional news provision. Subject to consultation the Government will pilot independent news consortia and introduce a sustainable fund from 2013. We will ensure strong and sustainable public service content with the BBC as the stable independent core and with a modernised remit for Channel 4. The government also announced its plans to accelerate the modernisation of government by delivering more services online – almost half of us already use the internet to access government services - making them quicker and more responsive and saving the taxpayer money.
